Home/ Services/ Psychiatric Assessment And Treatment

A psychiatric condition can affect every part of your life: sleep, relationships, concentration, motivation, the ability to work or to feel anything at all. And yet, getting the right diagnosis and the right treatment plan often takes far longer than it should. At Mecca Psychotherapeutic Centre in Ongwediva, the process begins with a thorough assessment, and it moves at a pace that is guided by your specific needs.

What Is A Psychiatric Assessment?

A psychiatric assessment is a structured clinical evaluation carried out by a qualified psychiatrist. The purpose is to understand your mental health symptoms, how they affect your daily life, and what may be contributing to them. It involves a detailed clinical interview, a review of your medical and psychiatric history, and, where necessary, additional investigations or screening tools.

At Mecca, psychiatric assessments are conducted by Dr Nelao Mhata, a specialist psychiatrist with training in the full range of adult and child psychiatric conditions. The assessment forms the foundation for every treatment plan at the centre.

What Conditions Are Assessed And Treated?

Mecca provides assessment and treatment for a broad range of psychiatric and mental health conditions. These include:

  • Depressive disorders, including major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder
  • Anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias
  • Psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder
  • Bipolar and related disorders
  • ADHD in children and adults
  • Trauma-related disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance use disorders
  • Neurocognitive disorders, including dementia
  • Maternal mental health conditions, including postnatal depression and perinatal anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Personality disorders
  • Workplace mental health concerns

What Happens During The Assessment?

The assessment typically begins with a conversation. Dr Mhata will ask about your current symptoms, when they started, how severe they are, and how they are affecting your ability to function. She will also explore your personal history, family history, and any previous treatment you may have received.

This is not a rushed process. A comprehensive assessment may take an hour or more, and it is designed to give the psychiatrist a clear picture of your mental health. Based on the findings, a diagnosis is made, and a treatment plan is discussed with you. That plan may include medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of approaches. For patients who require a higher level of support, admission to the centre's inpatient programme may be recommended.

What Should You Expect After The Assessment?

Treatment at Mecca is not a single appointment. It is an ongoing process. Follow-up consultations are scheduled to monitor your response to treatment, adjust medication if necessary, and track your overall progress. The goal is not just symptom relief, but sustained improvement in your quality of life.

If you are unsure whether a psychiatric assessment is the right step, the team at Mecca is available to discuss your concerns and help you decide.
