Maternal Mental Health

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are often described in terms of joy and anticipation. But for many women, these stages also bring significant emotional and psychological challenges.

Hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, changes in identity, and the pressure of new responsibilities can trigger or worsen mental health conditions. At Mecca Psychotherapeutic Centre, maternal mental health is treated with the clinical seriousness it requires.

What Is Maternal Mental Health?

Maternal mental health refers to the psychological well-being of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. It covers a broad range of conditions, from perinatal anxiety and prenatal depression to postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress following birth, and, in rare cases, postpartum psychosis.

These conditions are more common than many people realise. They are not a sign of weakness or failure. They are medical conditions with identifiable symptoms and effective treatments.

What Are The Signs To Watch For?

Every woman's experience is different, but there are common indicators that something may need attention. Persistent sadness or low mood that does not lift after a few weeks, severe anxiety or panic attacks, difficulty bonding with the baby, intrusive or frightening thoughts, withdrawal from family and social activities, significant changes in appetite or sleep beyond what is expected with a newborn, and feelings of guilt or worthlessness that interfere with daily life.

If you or someone close to you is experiencing any of these symptoms, it is worth seeking a professional assessment. Early intervention can make a significant difference.

How Is Maternal Mental Health Treated At Mecca?

Dr Nelao Mhata provides a comprehensive psychiatric assessment for women experiencing perinatal and postnatal mental health difficulties. The assessment explores the nature of the symptoms, their severity, how long they have been present, and whether there are any underlying or co-occurring conditions.

Treatment may include medication that is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, supportive counselling, psychoeducation for the patient and her family, and, where clinically indicated, a structured inpatient stay at the centre. The treatment plan is developed in collaboration with the patient. It takes her full circumstances into account, including her stage of pregnancy or postpartum recovery, her support network, and her own treatment preferences.

Support For Partners And Families

Maternal mental health not only affects the mother. Partners, parents, and extended family members often feel uncertain about how to help. Mecca offers psychoeducation sessions that equip families with a clearer understanding of what their loved one is going through and how they can provide meaningful, informed support during recovery.
